Hello GHMC Members,

Looking for something to do on this upcoming (potentially) rainy Sunday March 16? Driving your Mustang is optional.

The Cobra Experience Museum in Martinez, has their regular scheduled third Sunday of the month Open Day from 10 AM to 3 PM. What makes this open day on March 16 a little extra special is the fact that Dan and Norma McCabe will have their 2008 Shelby GT in the museum as “Car of the Month”.

Let’s all come out and support Dan & Norma and admire their Vista Blue beauty basking under the glow of the car of the month lights!

Please respond to this email if you would like to attend. We will meet at the Fairfield Costco parking lot, Leaving at 9:30 and be at  the Museum at 10am when it opens, and perhaps we can all pose for a group picture at 10:45am around the Shelby GT.

The Museum's address is 777 Arnold Drive (2nd floor) in Martinez, off of Hwy 4/Pine Street exit. This is a real treat for those of you who have never been there. The white Cobra and Ford GT from the movie Ford vs Ferrari are on display along with many more other Shelby's and race cars. Plus, they have a movie about Carroll Shelby that is a Must See!  Another Plus, we may have a surprise guest who worked with Carroll Shelby there.

Regular admission applies, please see the website www.cobraexperience.org if you want to see a preview of the museum or want more information.

This month, March, is also the return of Kids, Cars and Coffee at 830am for those who don’t mind the chance of rain and want to come out earlier to hang out.

Thanks!
Brian Evans

Paul Troxell, GHMC Board Member and Car Show Chairman has the following information on SB-712 and how it may affect you. Please share this with your friends, fellow car enthusiasts,  and collectors.

In reference to California SB-712 (Leno's Law) which was introduced on 2.21.2025 and read into the record for the first time on 2.24.2025 I have found the following.
This bill introduced by California State Senator Shannon Grove (R) D-12 would change the exemption date for vehicles required to have biannual smog inspections from prior to the 1976 model year, to prior to the 1990 model year. This law revision would exempt collector motor vehicles that are insured as collector motor vehicles, are at least 35 years old, and that "complies with the exhaust emissions standards for that motor vehicle’s class and model year as prescribed by the department, and that passes a functional inspection of the fuel cap and a visual inspection for liquid fuel leaks". Proof of such would have to be supplied by the registered owner.
Essentially this bill would change the exemption for smog checks from being those manufactured prior to 1976 to those manufactured prior to 1990 with proof being submitted that the vehicle is insured as a collector car.
The full text of the bill can be found at https://leginfo.legislature.ca.gov/faces/billTextClient.xhtml?bill_id=202520260SB712
along with its status. It is possible for this bill be voted upon any time after April. It would do well for all members to contact their CA Senator to express either their support, or lack of, for this bill. The easiest way to find out who your CA Senator is, is to go to https://findyourrep.legislature.ca.gov/ and enter your street address, city, and zip code. This will tell you who your CA Senator, and your CA Assembly Member are. Once you are at their website you can click on Contact and you will be able to see their Capitol Office address, email address, and phone number along with addresses and phone numbers for any satellite offices they may have.
It is perfectly fine to call, email, and drop a letter into the mail to your Senator or Assembly person. It is also very important to be polite and cordial. Remember that the Senator will not be the person answering the phone. The person who answers only works for, or interns for, your Senator. Being polite and cordial will do more to have your opinion logged properly than being rude or abusive. The person answering the phone is only marking a call log and not writing down your words. When they answer the phone just state your name, where you live, and ask that they let the Senator (or Assembly Member later) know that you either support the bill or do not support the bill. If you become abusive you will most likely be hung up on and your support, or lack of, for the bill will not be logged. After you have done so, politely say "Thank You" and hang up.
Legislators typically consider each phone call to their office as representative of 1,000 voters. This is mostly due to how few citizens communicate with them. So, calling, writing and emailing your Congressperson here in California and in Washington DC can have an effect on how they cast their votes. When they hear from 100 voters they are thinking about 100,000 voters; that could make the difference in their being reelected in the next election. This is the power that we have. If we do not use it, we shall surely lose it. So, contact your State Senator today and ask them to support SB-712.
Oh, and by the way, if you caught the "Leno's Law" at the beginning of this, here is a bit more on the Bill thanks to Dan McCabe:
Senator Shannon Grove Introduces Legislation for Classic Car Enthusiasts, Sponsored by Jay Leno
Today, State Senator Shannon Grove (R-Bakersfield) announced the introduction of Senate Bill 712, also known as Leno’s Law, to remove unnecessary and burdensome smog check requirements for classic vehicles, ensuring they remain a celebrated part of California’s culture and economy. Leno’s Law is sponsored by renowned car enthusiast and television icon Jay Leno, and seeks to fully exempt collector motor vehicles at least 35 model years or older from the biennial smog check program provided they are insured as collector vehicles.
“California has a rich automotive heritage, with some of the first classic cars rolling off assembly lines right here in our state,” said Senator Shannon Grove. “These rolling pieces of history are more than just vehicles—they have strong cultural ties in our communities and supply thousands of jobs in the aftermarket parts industry. Senate Bill 712 will update the current law to include all classic cars that are 35 years or older, allowing enthusiasts to enjoy their hobby without burdensome restrictions that are driving some collectors and industry businesses out of the state.”
Jay Leno, a lifelong collector and advocate for automotive culture, is backing the bill as its official sponsor.
“California’s rich classic car culture, sparked by the post-war hot rod boom and boosted by Hollywood’s love for chrome and horsepower, has made it a paradise for enthusiasts like me. From the start, California has been a driving force in shaping car culture, with deep ties to classic cars and a global reputation as a hub for these timeless machines,” said Jay Leno. “California’s smog check laws for classic cars need to be updated—they vary too much from state to state, and California’s rules don’t match up with neighboring ones. Our classic cars are only driven for special occasions, weekend drives and car shows. I am excited to work with Senator Grove on SB 712 to make it simpler for us to preserve these pieces of history.”
The legislation addresses smog check requirements that often hinder classic car owners. California’s automotive legacy dates back over a century, with early manufacturers like Studebaker and Pontiac setting up shop in the state. Today, the aftermarket parts industry for these vehicles generates billions annually, supporting jobs and small businesses. SB 712 aims to safeguard this economic engine while honoring the state’s pioneering role in car culture.
“SEMA is proud to support SB 712. Senator Grove’s bill provides a practical solution for collector vehicle owners, allowing them to enjoy their passion without the burden of unnecessary regulations,” said Mike Spagnola, President and CEO of the Specialty Equipment Market Association (SEMA). “These vehicles are rarely driven, meticulously maintained, and represent only a fraction of the cars on the road. By exempting collector vehicles from smog checks, we can ensure that these historical treasures are preserved for future generations.”
Representing the $52 billion specialty automotive aftermarket industry, SEMA is a trade association based in Diamond Bar made up of approximately 7,000 small businesses nationwide, including 1,066 in California, that manufacture, market, and sell specialty automotive aftermarket products, including restoration, appearance, performance, comfort, convenience, and technology products for motor vehicles.
California has a thriving specialty automotive aftermarket industry. This industry significantly contributes to the state's economy, generating $40.44 billion in economic impact. This translates to supporting 149,325 jobs, $13.47 billion in total wages and benefits, and $6.16 billion in taxes paid.
“From car shows to weekend cruises, classic cars bring people together and keep our history vibrant,” added Senator Shannon Grove. “With Jay Leno’s support, we’re sending a clear message: California values its automotive roots and the communities that keep them running.”
The bill is expected to move through the legislative process in the coming months, with strong backing from car clubs, industry leaders, and enthusiasts statewide. The first bill hearing will be in the Senate Transportation Committee in April. For more information, follow at @ShannonGroveCA

Hello GHMC Members,
The Golden Hills Mustang Club is  planing a road trip to Gold Beach Oregon to ride Jerry's Jet Boat on the Majestic Rogue River!
We will be taking the 104 mile, White Water trip and hope to charter the whole boat. It takes 30 people to do that.
We have done this trip many time and always look forward to doing it again! As you can see in the attached pictures this trip is more than a boat ride.
I took that picture of a Eagle catching a trout that was next to the boat many years ago and it still amazes me.
We will leave on Wednesday, July 16th come home on the 20th. We plan on spending Wednesday night in Eureka and having dinner (Hopefully) at the Samoa Cookhouse.
The boat ride is 159.00 each, lunch is included. Working on hotel rooms.
We need a firm commitment to secure the boat and rooms so if you can go please reply to this email or call us as soon as you can because hotels fill up fast in July.
Hope to hear from you soon!

From Matthew Brown:

Mr. Banovitz,

I wanted to personally thank you for the care package the Golden Hills Mustang Club sent me.  I personally took the girl scout cookies for myself but handed out the remainder of the package to one of my
squads.  They were very thankful of the socks and magazines as entertainment runs short out here.

Please give our thanks to CrossFit Solano as well.

Again, thank you for  your support.  It is received well by me and my Platoon.

How's it going Sir,

Just wanted to let you know from me an my platoon that we were very grateful for the package you sent SFG Gorbet he was quick to pass out a few things to us an share the love lol. I had to acknowledge the fact you went out of your way for us. Being on the other side of the world away from family gets rough sometimes. But just small kind gestures like that make it slightly better. I really appreciated it.

Thank you,
